Why the Pool Surround Is the First Slab to Give Up
On the Gold Coast, the concrete around a pool cops more punishment than any other slab on the property. Salt-laden air travels well inland from the surf and works into the pores of bare concrete, staining the surface and speeding up wear. Pool water splashes over the coping every time someone gets in. And the sun is doubly hard on a pool deck, because glare off the water adds to the UV exposure the slab is already copping from above.
The results are familiar around older pools from Broadbeach Waters to Robina: faded, chalky colour that dates the whole backyard, surface pitting and rough worn patches, white salt deposits that keep coming back, and black mould in the shaded corners that stay damp through a humid coastal summer. Worse than the cosmetics are the two problems you feel: smooth-trowelled concrete turns slippery the moment it's wet, and a bare slab in full January sun gets too hot to walk on barefoot.
None of that means the concrete has to come out. If the slab underneath is structurally sound, a sprayed overlay fixes the surface - the grip, the heat, the colour and the staining - in a couple of days, without demolition machinery working beside a pool shell. What a Pool Deck Coating Actually Is
The system we install on Gold Coast pool surrounds is spraycrete - a blend of cement, graded sands and liquid polymers, mixed on site and sprayed over your existing concrete at around 2 to 3 millimetres thick. The polymer content is what makes it bond tightly to the old slab and cope with heat, movement and traffic. The old concrete stays in the ground doing the structural work it was always doing; the overlay gives it a new face.
The two claims that matter around a pool both come from the way it goes on. Because the overlay is sprayed rather than trowelled smooth, it cures with a fine, even texture. That texture still grips with wet feet - which is why spraycrete is the standard finish for Queensland pool surrounds rather than paint or a smooth decorative topping. The same texture stays cooler underfoot than plain concrete, a difference you notice most in the months when the pool gets the heaviest use.
Colour is oxide-based and sealed in, so it won't peel like paint. What Pool Deck Coating Costs on the Gold Coast
Most spraycrete work lands between $50 and $100 per square metre including sealing. Where your surround sits in that range comes down to the condition of the slab, how much preparation it needs, the finish you pick and how easy the site is to access - stencil patterns and decorative borders sit at the upper end. As a worked example: a 45m² surround in good condition, coated in a standard colour, comes out around $4,200 including GST. Pool surrounds are often smaller than driveways, so note the floor under the pricing - smaller jobs carry a $4,000 minimum total to cover mobilisation and setup, so a 20m² strip of coping won't scale down proportionally. For comparison, ripping out and re-pouring concrete usually starts around $150 per square metre before demolition and disposal - and beside a pool that demolition happens hard against the shell, the coping and the fencing. A Real Pool Surround: Greystone with Black and White Fleck

The surround was prepared, repaired and sprayed in Greystone with a black and white fleck, steps included, then sealed. How a Pool Surround Job Runs
Every job starts with a free on-site assessment - about 20 minutes, no obligation. We check the slab is a good candidate, look at drainage and access, talk colours with samples in hand, and give you a fixed price on the spot. Coastal slabs need honest preparation before any overlay goes down, so the crew grinds back the old surface, pressure cleans it, patches cracks and chips, and treats salt and stain damage so the overlay bonds properly. Pool edges, walls and gardens are masked off before any spraying starts.
The cement-polymer mix is then sprayed on with a hopper gun in even coats, building up your chosen colour and texture, with stencil patterns and borders laid between coats. Two coats of UV-stable sealer finish the job. Most residential surrounds run two to three days from preparation to final seal, weather permitting - a fair chunk of that is drying time between coats - and foot traffic is fine after about 24 hours, so the pool is barely out of action.
Looking After a Coated Pool Deck
Maintenance is deliberately boring: sweep it, hose it, and wash it occasionally with a mild detergent - no harsh acids or degreasers. The sealer is what shields the surface from salt air and pool chemicals, so coastal properties should have it topped up periodically. A fresh coat of sealer every three to five years keeps the colour sharp and the protection up, and looked after that way the surface will last 20-plus years.
